Seaball By: Brittney Marie Kaiser
_ Once upon a time there was a bottlenose dolphin named Sid, he lived in the Pacific Ocean. he was very energetic and loved playing catch with his friends. One day while out playing he saw some of the bigger dolphins playing seaball and thought “i wanna be just like that one day”. As he got older he practiced and practiced, he soon got really good! Later in life Pacific Community College wanted him to come play seaball for them, they gave him a full ride scholarship and everything. When he started going to school there he was taking classes to become a scientist, thats when he learned about why he was two different shades of gray. As Professor Gail stool in front of the class she explained “The darker color on the top of them makes them blend in with the water when viewed they are from above. The coloring on their underside makes them less visible from predators below because their almost white belly makes them less noticeable by predators against the sunlight filtering down from above”. This interested him a lot. He later then dropped out of seaball to take more science classes. During lunch a few months later he met Marry, she was also a bottlenose dolphin. They slowly became friends, and she helped Sid with his studies. Years later got married and had three baby dolphins, James, Brooklyn, and Jamie. Seeing that there was only one boy Sid hoped he would grow up to play seaball. Sid made sure James grew up a seaball fan and every sunday they wend outside to play. James became better then Sid ever was and got a scholar ship to Coral University when he was only a freshman. Sid had never been so proud of hid little boy. When James started to play for CU there were many other dolphins that hame to watch him, from all across the ocean. Sid started to to get really sick and there was nothing anyone could do, but he had just one wish and that was to see his son play professionally. A few months before he died The Pacific Rocks signed James to play for them and at that very point in time all of Sid’s dreams had came true.
The Bottlenose Dolphin - Taylor Dolan
My group and I chose to do the Bottlenose Dolphin because we wanted to know more about them and why they are endangered. The reason that they got their name Bottlenose Dolphin is because their beaks are in the shape of a bottle. Their bodies are shaped like a ‘torpedo’ so they can glide through the water easier. The male dolphins are usually bigger than the females, they grow up to be 8 to 12 1/2 feet long and weigh about 1100 pounds. The females grow up to be 7 1/2 to 12 feet long and weigh about 570 pounds. They are gray to a dark gray on their backs, and a fading gray to a white on their bellies and by the their lower jaw.
There are two different types of the Bottlenose Dolphin, the Coastal and Offshore Dolphins. The Coastal Dolphins are usually found more towards the shallow waters and where it is warm. Such as the bays, lagoons, and the harbors. The Offshore Dolphins are found towards the deeper waters where it is cold. But the Bottlenose Dolphins are usually found in temperate and tropic waters, where the surface of the water is about 10º and 32º C.
The Bottlenose Dolphins are becoming endangered as of right now because of all sorts of things. Things as like being tapped in peoples fishing gears, pollution to the waters they live in, habitat degradation meaning their surroundings are not safe for them such as pollution so they are being killed , and one more thing is low frequency sonar which means the noise the sonar makes goes all through out the ocean and it destroys their hearing. It causes their ears and lungs to have bleeding through them from ruptured blood vessels.
These dolphins swim with groups called pods. Coastal Dolphins swim up to 5-20 members in their pods, but with Offshore Dolphins they swim with about 60 or more. They are very good sociable animals, by making sounds, chasing, protecting, feeding, and even nursing each other. They mostly eat squid, fish, and crustaceans. They actually do not chew their food, they lightly grasp the food.
The skin of the Bottlenose Dolphin is camouflage to the ocean, being able to hide from their predators. If your looking at their backs it would look like your looking in to the deep dark ocean, if your looking at their bellies it looks like your looking at the surface of the ocean. Bottlenose Dolphins can not hold their breaths for more than 7 minutes, so that is why you will see them towards the surface of the water. To save some air in them, while they dive their hearts beat much slower. Their noses are a good thing to have for them, that is what helps them kill their predators such as sharks and killer whales. The Bottlenose Dolphin is the most known dolphin because they interact with humans.
